Update regarding Pinterest 2 pages: [1] 2
Posted: Tuesday, March 12, 2019 1:23:22 PM
Since the previous thread has been locked please forgive the new post.

I have been trying to communicate with Pinterest regarding ongoing issues such as
- autofilled descriptions nearly identical on all pins not matching site product descriptions
- lack of website link in description section
- no opportunity to add a tracking code/verify referral link

Regarding a previous issue of product pins not showing as rich pins Pinterest indicated there was an issue with Zazzle's site tags (see info and photos attached in original post) and suggested the web developer be contacted. It appears that Zazzle addressed this partially as product pins are now showing as rich.

However Pinterest has responded that the same issue with Zazzle site tags is the reasoning behind the changes witnessed.

Response received after a couple weeks of back and forth

"Hi Harmony,

Thanks for sharing the youtube recording!

I have looked into it and checked the pin link (example link withheld) that you have sent and found that description that you see on the pin is based on the rich pin tag placed on the website. I have attached a screenshot for your reference.

I would request you contact the web developer on this issue and sought this out."

So it seems that Pinterest feels this is a website issue while Zazzle notes it is a Pinterest issue

Same issue with Twitter - exact same wording.

which would make sense if it is a web developer issue

I can see your frustration, Harmony. Good on you for persevering to get this far.

If you're also a pragmatist as well, there is an answer - use Nifty. I've just checked some of my pins made with Nifty and all are as they should be.

Have a look at some of these pinned today with it:

If you want to check Nifty out, get over to the tools forum for more on it.

looks like the same description issue to me. And nifty doesn't really work for collections

I see what you mean - sorry I'd not understood you properly before, Harmony.
One positive thing: because they are rich pins, as soon as Zazzle puts it right, so all exisiting pins will be put right without us having to do anything about it.

Now, what's the cause of what we're seeing? It's this part of the behind-the-scenes html code on product pages. Here's what I mean from a product page:

Code:
<meta name="description" content="Shop Ocean Aquatic Cute Shark Starfish Custom created by CompassRose. Personalize it with photos &amp; text or purchase as is!"/>
<meta name="og:description" content="Shop Ocean Aquatic Cute Shark Starfish Custom created by CompassRose. Personalize it with photos &amp; text or purchase as is!"/>
    <meta name="og:title" content="Ocean Aquatic Cute Shark Starfish Custom | Zazzle.com"/>
<meta name="twitter:description" content="Shop Ocean Aquatic Cute Shark Starfish Custom created by CompassRose. Personalize it with photos &amp; text or purchase as is!"/>
    <meta name="twitter:title" content="Ocean Aquatic Cute Shark Starfish Custom | Zazzle.com"/>

Each of those that begin with Shop... should really be the first part of the description we the artists write. Not that 'constructed' description.

I imagine Zazzle has a reason for doing this - I know it's not what you, I or anyone concerned about making things friendly for people who see them want.

It's got to be bad for SEO for exactly the same reasons that Zazzle asks us to try to use unique titles and tags as much as we can.

Like you, I'm not happy about this.

as a result of that change NONE of my new pins in the past 2 weeks have gotten any interaction and my views have dropped by 150K. Terrible for search ability and SEO. If this is how our items are promoted then why all the fuss about making good product descriptions

I'll also add a note of something that just happened when I used the Pinterest share link from my Zazzle product page:

- Clicked the Zazzle "Share This" Pinterest icon right below the product image.

- Typed up a really nice description/comment including hashtags and such.

- Pinned to my board.

- Checked the pin. The description I spent 5 minutes writing IS GONE. And replaced with ONLY the product name. Upon "refresh" the generic rich pin wording appears in larger text under the zazzle.com link bar next the the pin.
The text I wrote up as my own comment/description is completely missing.

- Using Pinterest directly, I can edit the description/comment and it sticks just fine. So far. LOL

Something screwy with the Zazzle "share this" widget?

Let's hope it is a glitch and not intentional. It would be nice to be able to get it fixed not only for SEO reasons which are important but also so we can edit the links again to add tracking.

Mark, I like nifty but I also like to pin from the product page immediately after publishing a product and not being able to add tracking is a huge handicap.

My pin interaction has also dropped dramatically since this first started.

I had the same problem for several weeks where the description and hashtags didn't carry over but seems to be working for me now. Maybe I should say that they are working at this very minute and I hope it lasts.

now all my pins have reset to zero impressions

Same for me.

Same here, impressions aren't working. I promoted a post and it had over 550 impressions and 27 clicks. Yesterday, the impressions went to zero but the number of clicks is still there.

I am hoping Zazzle can provide a response as we have established the site meta tags issue

Hey guys, just to confirm, are you wanting or expecting to see "About this product" or the "about this design"? TIA

About this design is the one that used to be copied over and the one that I would like to see it return to. Thanks James.

I don't know if this is helpful but I just went looking at older pins of mine to verify that it used to be the "about this design" description that carried over. Well even older pins that I pinned long before this was an issue have the generic description now.

In case that makes any difference to tech I wanted to mention it.

we have established that zazzle has made changes to the site meta tags affecting descriptions but staff have not offered comment

Think about it this way.. what sets each design of, say a blanket, from every other blanket? Using the "About this product" means all we have to differentiate products in the SEOverse is the title...

Thanks Shelli. Well if you all could share what you would like to see there, than we can compile the preferences and see which is best to go with. Like if is was the "about this design" then the designer would have to ensure that this is populated, I suppose and not just generic. Your feedback would be appreciated. Roses

Before it was the designer's description that became the Pinterest description also. That was perfect because we did not have to write another one when pinning it we could just add a few hashtags and we were done.

Also as Fharryn said it distinguished our designs from other designs. The way it is now I am surprised they haven't been flagged as spam since lots of pins all end up with the same description and only the title to tell them apart.

I’m going to cast my vote for the designer’s description also.

before zazzle changed the site meta tags the rich pin description was the designer's description.

Now all pin descriptions have been replaced with
Shop [product title] created by [designer]. Personalize it with photos &; text or purchase as is!

terrible for SEO as all descriptions are the same and provide little description of the actual product
