Media display 2 pages: [1] 2
Posted: Saturday, September 07, 2019 12:32:19 PM
I'm a new designer and have a question regarding the media display on my store page. Is it possible to affect the size of the item displayed? I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is a bug or as designed. I have 3 items posted and the first one is cut off but the other 2 are fine. Thanks in advance!

It's cut off only in the thumbnail, and is likely due to the size or shape and the need to fit it in. It's really no more than a link to the real image, so you probably shouldn't worry about it.

that bugs me too and I could find no way to keep it from happening... I tried resizing my images but it always cropped it no matter what size I chose.

Ditto.
I have noticed in the last few days working on my store front that it seems to be zoomed in and cut off even more of my first image than it did when I first uploaded it. I thought I had managed to get it to look OK before. Or maybe I'm remembering wrong...
I think it would be great if that whole thing could look more like our collections do when we share them.

I'm not sure I totally understand what the purpose of the "media" images is. I made a bunch of collages to use as category headers and just uploaded them into media. It seemed to make Zazzle happy, but I'm not sure it added much to my storefront, and yes, they do get weirdly cropped. Curious how others are using this feature and/or if you think it adds something to your storefront.

I had a hiccup responding so I will try again. My interest in the topic was based on my perception, perhaps incorrectly that having 10 media images was part of your store completion metric and z-Rank. I thought these would be displayed on the right side of your public store page so I was trying to get it right. As to the size, as you upload them Zazzle requires a minimum size of 1440x1440 pixels so that is how I sized them. If that is too big, then why is that the minimum?

You are correct in terms of z-rank - at least my z-rank went up once I uploaded 10 images. My comment was more that I just don't really understand Zazzle's intent with these things, or how they were envisioning them being used so they'd actually add to the customer experience. I don't necessarily mind having to jump through hoops, I'd just like to understand the reasoning behind it so perhaps I could respond in a more meaningful way.

I always thought the media was for if you ordered your own products and took in real life photos of them, like yourself wearing your own shirt or shoes, or a puzzle you ordered and put together...ex.

At least that's what I've used it for on my main shop.

p.s. the cropping on it bothers me too Sad

It is a chance for you to show off what your specialties are or if you have any photos of your products you purchased in real life use, or show a video of you creating some art, etc...

It is like your own advertising area.

There are 3 designers I can think of who have really put it to great use and theirs are really inspiring.

One with you tube videos of her art methods.

One with testimonials from her clients and promotional items that lead to her website and another one with a gallery of photos of her craft fair booths and products in situ.

I am sure there are many more I haven't seen yet. And someday I need to work on improving mine.

It’s wasted on me. I don’t advertise my store—just my products. Statcounter indicates to my eye that visitors to my store are, for the most part, curious designers.

Media pretty much annoys me, because you can't link from media to products, so any photo, video or explainer graphic stands isolated and therefore is not much help. I provide media mainly for zazzle to check off the completion list.

Since I have to provide something I do the best I can to make it interesting and or fun.

ETA-I just rearranged mine a bit so that extra zoomed first photo is one that doesn't look bad like that. It is just the odd cropping of that first photo that makes it harder to work with than the others that show square.

I use mine for a mix of work in progress pictures of my artwork and some for items that family, friends, and I have ordered and I have been able to get photos of. The pictures are not of the greatest quality because a lot of them were just old Instagram photos from my personal account that I had taken in my house while painting and my house has horrible lighting.

Hmmm... that's very interesting. It would never occur to me to actually purchase some of my own stuff. Maybe if I ever start to make "real money" here, I'll try that and consider it a business expense.

Your stuff is gorgeous, BTW!

Thanks Shelli! That does sound inspiring. I guess maybe it's more for people who are artists as opposed to just designers like I am.

I actually have thousands and thousands of graphics on my website that I've designed over the past dozen years or so which could be interesting, but since the focus of my website is graphics for social media use, none of them would be either be very relevant to Zazzle nor would they be high enough resolution. But maybe I can think of some creative way to use them in an "about us" sort of way. Hmmm.....

FYI I was inspired by one o the prior posts to reorder the media so that while it is cut off, it doesn't look crazy. I did post 10 total, 5 show on the side of the page, and you can click to see the remainder. Its an improvement for now but I'd like to better understand how to leverage that "real estate" on the right.

Well, FWIW, you're doing a much better job at it than I am. I think the stuff you've posted looks great!

Media is like an extension of the About section. The About section was for text, and the media section for images and videos. What I noticed recently is the first image in media has been cropped. But I also noticed that some of the images have been added to the About section, which is actually a good thing, because now media is more connected to the About section. Smile

However I have 3 pages of media but now only a total of 10 images are visible in the public view, but I can still see all in store management. I am not sure when any of the images started appearing in the About section, so it looks like Zazzle is making changes to the site. Maybe a moderator can explain what is going on, including why all of the images in media are no longer visible when viewing from the public side.

I suspect that as soon as a moderator spots this thread, it will be moved elsewhere, so if it suddenly comes up missing, just search for it.

I thought 10 was always the limit that anyone but you could see, but I could be wrong because I never tried to add more than 10. you could shuffle your images every so often so that you have different ones at different times.

you are probably right! Too much chit chat! Laughing

In the public view, there were arrows at the bottom to go to the next pages to see all the images or click the arrow to the left or the right of the image to see the previous image or the next one.

In addition its a section of my Zazzle store I update regularly just like I do with other sections that can be updated or changed and that include shuffling images in media. There are no upcoming holidays or any other reasons that I currently need to make changes to media immediately. I can attempt to add recent photos as I was planning to do and have done in the past but would like to hear from Zazzle before I make any changes. It seems like Zazzle's site is in the midst of another change.

I just deleted mine awhile ago as it didn't link to actual products and I found an image I had used as media being sold on Amazon without my permission (the seller was not Zazzle)

OK - this thread inspired me to attempt to put something a tad bit more useful into my media. (Heavy emphasis on the "tad bit" part.) So I uploaded some stuff but nothing's sticking. Anybody know if you need to wait for some sort of indexing or something? Or maybe you can only have 10 images? Any clues would be appreciated.

Click on the blue number of posts in any of your posts that are still in their place to get to posts that have been moved.
Searching can get a little tedious.

My last media upload with the "Wow its big"- real foil favor tag video took several tries before it stuck. Just try it again.

BTW: I love your staff. Love

Wait! If you can see my "staff" pictures then my changes did stick... I wonder why they're not visible to me. Hmmm... I guess I'll just wait a bit and see.

OK... really weird. My changes show up in the public storefront, but not on my end.

Anyhoo… I tried to outsmart the weird cropping issue by making the first image horizontal rather than square, but it totally didn't work, it just cropped to a section in the center of the rectangle. Gah! Guess I'll try something else.
