Designers,

If you’ve heard of the term paradox of choice, you know that when it comes to making decisions, more options isn’t always better. The Harvard Business Review cites that too many choices may undermine sales. Their research from 2006 says that when there is too much to choose from, ‘consumers are less likely to buy anything at all, and if they do buy, they are less satisfied with their selections.’

We at Zazzle have witnessed this and while we generally want to accommodate with as many different styles as possible, we also want and need during the holidays to make sure that people can make easy decisions that are fulfilled with great care and delivered on time.

We want to let you know of something that went into effect last week.We have made a concerted effort to highlight and showcase the most-popular styles for our apparel offering, and as a result, we are electing not to offer some of the apparel SKUs for the holiday season.

We have paired down the choices to the most popular styles for this time of year. There are a couple of reasons why we’ve made this decision:

Streamlined Checkout Process: With fewer options, our customers will have an easier time in the conversion process
Manufacturing Efficiencies: Increase manufacturing efficiency will lead to quicker ship and delivery times
Longer Availability: Given we are focusing our manufacturing efforts on a more streamlined assortment, we will be able to offer clothing later into the holiday season (vs prior years) allowing customers additional options for gifts that will be delivered before Christmas
Promotional Advantages: By offer select styles, we can achieve greater bundling discounts, which we hope will lead to savings

How will this impact you as a designer? Hopefully, it won't. If your shirt is posted for sale on an out-of-stock SKU, it will still show up in our search results. We are working on adding callouts to prompt the customer to choose a different in-stock style shirt so you will not lose sales.

This change is intended to present the best possible offering in the easiest manner for customers for this holiday season and we expect to be back with the full offering once the season is over. Overall, we’re confident this will be a great experience for our customers, which in turn will be great for you, our designers.

Thank you, as always, for the great work you do.

Dear Designers,

We’re excited to announce #ZAZZLESHOWANDTELL, a new social program that is encouraging more post-purchase customer sharing. Remember ‘Show and Tell’ from 3rd grade? We’re hoping to bring that excitement back! As a platform that works towards inspiring creativity, we want to showcase and celebrate all the fantastic creations that happen right on our site. We want to add more color and stories to the designs you add to blank products. # ZAZZLESHOWANDTELL encourages customers to ‘show’ us what they created on Zazzle, and “tell’ us why they created it on Zazzle.

Once we get lots of submissions, we hope to get more UGC (user-generated content) live on the site so customers and potential customers alike can see the full potential of Zazzle. We’re hoping to utilize these photos in other marketing channels as well, including emails, blogs, etc.

A lot of you have been wondering what the distinction is between # ZAZZLESHOWANDTELL and #ZAZZLEMADE:

#ZAZZLESHOWANDTELL is focused on post-purchase user-generated content. Please do not share photos from the site with this hashtag. Every week, we will pick a winner to receive $250 Zazzle credit. If you are a designer, yes, you can absolutely participate IF you share original post-purchase content (images, video, TikTok videos, Boomerangs, whatever -- as long as it’s original.) Please do not take images directly from the site and repurpose them. They will not qualify for the contest and will clutter the feed.

#ZAZZLEMADE will still be used. We are refocusing it for our designer community. If you want to showcase your design, please continue to use this hashtag. We want our designers to continue to be proud of their creations and their stores, and this is the perfect hashtag.

We’re excited to continue to grow Zazzle!
