Update to Custom HTML in Product Descriptions
Posted: Tuesday, March 1, 2016 6:19:47 PM
Hi Designers,

With our new Collections feature in full swing, we’re looking to make even more incremental improvements for the best experience on Zazzle for both our Designers and our customers.

To fully show off the functionality of displaying Collections on our product pages and make our products pages as attractive as possible to customers, we will be moving forward with a small update to product descriptions such that HTML will no longer be displayed in this field. If you have used custom HTML in your products’ descriptions, here is what you can expect to see:

Starting approximately Friday, March 4, HTML will not be accepted in the description field for any new products being published going forward. Beginning approximately Wednesday, March 23, existing HTML in product descriptions will be removed from the site. Rest assured that any initial text-only paragraph will remain in your product descriptions, with only HTML removed.

If you have products which currently use HTML in their descriptions, we suggest that you review these products to save any information you may wish to keep related to the HTML used for your own reference, and/or remove this HTML yourself to ensure that your product descriptions will display exactly how you would like them after this update.

We also highly recommend that you take full advantage of our feature that displays your Collections on product pages! Take a look at our blog post here to learn more about how to make sure that your Collection of related products appears on your product pages to show off other products from your store that your customers would be most interested in.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated as me move forward with this small improvement for our product pages.

Thanks as always for designing with Zazzle!

Many of you are unhappy that we’re getting rid of the ability to add HTML to your product descriptions. We know many of you have put a lot of time and effort into creating these descriptions. Just so you know, there were many improper implementations of the HTML product descriptions (e.g., lines and lines of links to outside content). Given these issues, it was necessary to remove it. We’ve added the Collections feature, which is a great way to showcase your related products. Again, this change is designed as a way to improve all of the product pages overall. We’re trying to add consistency to the marketplace and to make consumers’ experiences better.

Hi Designers,

Here’s the latest news on our update regarding custom HTML in product descriptions.

We wanted to let you know that we’re still making progress on our update, but you won’t be seeing any changes just yet. We’ve gotten a lot of good feedback on this update, and so we’ll be taking a little more time (past our initial timeframe of March 23rd) to ensure that our specific implementation of this update will have the least possible impact on your existing designs.

We will be finalizing our specific plans for this update within the next two weeks, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated as to exactly when you can expect to see this implemented on your product pages. In the meantime, we encourage you to continue reviewing and updating your existing designs which include custom HTML in their descriptions. This is the best way to make sure that your product descriptions will look exactly how you’d like them to once our update goes into effect.

Thanks as always for your patience and understanding!

Hi Designers,

The removal of the HTML in product descriptions concluded in the wee hours this morning. We believe the removal of the code will improve user experience overall and that our new collections will provide better engagement and consistency across the site. If you had used HTML on your product pages, you should now see text-only descriptions, minus the HTML. If your descriptions aren’t displaying exactly how you would like after this update, you may want to go in and tweak spacing and such.

Thanks again for your help improving the Zazzle experience!
