New Department Tree Coming Soon!
Posted: Tuesday, August 07, 2018 1:35:26 PM
Soon, there’ll be an exciting new change to how we categorize products on Zazzle! We’ll be rolling out this new department tree on .com initially as an A/B test in the next week or so.

The updated department tree has been designed with both the customer and designers in mind. We want to make it easier for customers to find exactly what they're looking for and for designers to be able to have their designs surface in those particular areas.

The new department tree will also enable search engines to better crawl our site while allowing us to market specific product lines to more defined audience types. The result will allow you to more easily specify the department that best fits your product so that it surfaces to the right people.

To give you a more concrete example, under the current department tree, you can only publish a poster in:
· Arts & Posters > Posters

With the new department tree, you’ll have the option to publish your poster under any of the new departments listed below:
· Art & Wall Décor > Posters & Prints
· Baby & Kids > Nursery & Kids Room Décor > Art & Wall Décor > Growth Charts
· Crafts & Party Supplies > Party Supplies > Décor > Signs
· Crafts & Party Supplies > Party Supplies > Stationery > Guest Books
· Office & School > Small Business Supplies > Signs & Posters > Posters & Prints
· Weddings > Décor & Party Supplies > Décor > Wedding Signs
· Weddings > Décor & Party Supplies > Décor > Wedding Signs > Seating Charts
· Weddings > Favors & Gifts > Savor the Memories > Photo Prints
· Weddings > Invitations & Stationery > Day-of Stationery > Guest Books

We’ll give you additional information when we launch this initiative, but for now, know that this site improvement is going to allow you to be a ‘big fish in a small pond.’ More to follow – get excited!

Hi Designers,

As we mentioned, a new department tree is in the works!

As of last Friday, we've been a/b testing the new department tree on some of our domains. For those of you who are unfamiliar with e-commerce testing, an A/B test is a method of comparing two versions against each other to determine which one performs better. In this case, it means on some of our domains, a random group of users will be served up the new department tree experience, while as a control, the rest of the users will continue to see the previous version. As this is such a significant change to our backend systems, we want to make sure the new experience will not negatively impact sales. Being able to compare the old and new will help us cross our T's and dot our I's!

What users are shown is entirely random. If you noticed any changes in your site experience, please be aware it's planned and expected. There is nothing for you guys to do at this point except be aware that this test is happening.

This project has been in the works for the past couple of years and has required a lot of man-hours, so we're excited to finally be at the testing stage. We’ll keep you posted on our progress.

If you have any comments, please continue to add to this thread.

Thank you for sticking with us!
