Lets do a Description Exercise... Anyone? 2 pages: [1] 2
Posted: Sunday, July 28, 2019 6:18:07 PM
Speaking from experience, sometimes describing my own art is very difficult for me. Though through practice I'm getting better. As an artist, I imagine the same might be true for you too.

This is going to be an exercise in letting someone else write a description for your product, so you can get a feel for what a customer sees when they see your artwork on an item.

We will use 5 different products from 5 different artists. ***All products for this exercise have now been submitted***

For these products, the goal is to get 5 descriptions for each one. Each description written by a different person. So, in the end, we will have 25 descriptions, written by 25 different people, 5 for each product.

For folks who feel inspired to write a description for each product, or more than 1 product, you will see your "over one" descriptions listed at the end of each product section as "bonus descriptions." I don't want to prevent sharing...

Once a product has 5 descriptions, not counting bonus descriptions, that product will be "closed".

Ideally the individuals that submitted pieces of art/product will use the five different descriptions, in part or whole on 5 of their products that share the artwork described.

Maybe... every now and then they can update us on which description seems to be driving traffic.

The idea is to help us as artists "see" how others view the art they see.

If you think this is stupid, please keep it to yourself and don't post anything.

REMEMBER - The goal is to create a post that people can learn from. Be nice or don't participate.

I'll push post and we shall see what happens. Idea

***Bonus Descriptions:

"Crosses, stripes and small crosses

The first impression – someone left the colors unattended and the kids (sorry!) played with them. In any case, each leg was painted by another painter… Many horizontal and vertical strokes also suggest that children – big or small – delighted themselves, had got pleasure. To me in pure physiology seems to be a little too much purple. But maybe this predomination is exactly the bait of this design, the hook to catch on. Forward, courage, and joy!"

"These black and white espadrilles show fragments of a mandala that inspires and gives your footwear interest with its tribal angles, curves and floral shapes. Though it comes with an energetic high contrast the ability to meditate on the lines makes staring at your feet an exercise in calm and serenity."

Or (keeping the tags)

Golden Ratio Zen Mandala

A modern mandala done in black and white. The illustration contains the classic symbols for the zen, golden ration, spiral, white flower petal and a zig zag line representing that the path to inner peace isnt always a straight line."

"The combination of black and white is eternal – from the immemorial days when night and day were the main managers of life and action. Let the mysterious symbolic characters remain for professionals, collectors of ideas and ornaments. Because drawing, sample, pattern speak for themselves. About the past, about the oriental, exotic disposition, about a certain element of the game, the puzzle. The various, geometric elements (tiny concentric circles!) are not only attractive as themselves but also create the joy of guessing this hidden message. The sole, with its neutral yet highly natural material, reinforces this effect of old times and distant cultural roots. Recommended for You! "

Product #4

Description 1:

"My phone - my friend. It should not only be functional (it is!) but be helpful and supporting. I see the Bumblebee on it - it is already such a helper: diligent, hard-working, tireless. In its way - just harvesting Lavender (my favorite color and favorite smell!) it makes me quiet, certain, creative. I like the vertical orientation of everything which corresponds with the phone's form very good, especially the two outside columns (they could be seen also as a part of the amethyst arch - the symbol for stability and safety). I like the little white flower, too, - with its yellow center coordinating another color-line. Yes, it is My Bee. "

Thanks for participating. I hope that this exercise helps you "see" different ways that the same art or product can be interpreted. Hopefully it widens your perspective and helps get the creative juices flowing when you are writing descriptions for your own products.

Cheers!

I'm not clear on this point:

Quote:
-For this we need 5 works of art on a product.

I usually don't stuff 5 pieces of art on a product but create a product with a cohesive design which may or may not consist of several elements.

So do you mean five products each with a different design by any chance?

Simply 5 products in total with an "artistic" design (not simple text, some artwork that can be described in various ways by different people) on them. As I've understood.

okay, I will start you off with the first product

It is direct only until we get done then I will publish it with the best description

Feel free to add tags and a title too if you want to.

5 products. From different people on different products. The product will have only 1 piece of art displayed on it.

Okay, I give it a go:

Shellis "Tattered Tartan" Leggings
Artistic leggings for artistic people.
These leggings use broad brushstrokes
to hint a tartan which is tattered and
interrupted by another tartan pattern.
You just love the grunge, vintage style
in bold colors of pink, blue and a hint of gold,
then these leggings are for you esp. if you
have Scotsmen in your ancestry.

Oh, I really like "Tattered Tartan"! I name all my designs just like people name paintings and sculptures, and use the name in my Titles and Collections. That's a great one, wish I had thought of it first. ;)

Also liked that you worked in "grunge" as another keyword.

Thanks! I was really stuck on "...modern design meets traditional style...". 'Style' isn't quite the right word but I don't know what to call something like plaid or batik or tie-dye or greek key or herringbone .. you know, commonly known .... styles? patterns? techniques? I've run into this quandary in writing some of my own things and feel like there's got to be a word for it, I just don't know what it would be.

These are great, I'm not as descriptive as all this.

One thing I wanted to point out, the first time I saw the leggings, it looked to me to be "graffiti style" like it was spray painted, with a shimmer.

Someone work that up Grin

I'd love to submit a design, but need to figure out how to add my product image.

Maz Mandala Markings
These black and white espadrilles show fragments of a mandala that inspires and gives your footwear interest with its tribal angles, curves and floral shapes. Though it comes with an energetic high contrast the ability to meditate on the lines makes staring at your feet an exercise in calm and serenity.

Tags:
fragmented mandala, tribal markings, floral shapes, black and white line art, angles and curves, fern, circles, zig zag, dots and dashes

couldn't resist another alliteration Grin esp since an M submitted the fragmented mandala.

I couldn't figure out why Josh put mine for Maz as a "bonus description"

then I read the rules that say "you can only write one description"

Josh, this is not clear that you meant only one during the whole exercise... it is easy to think you meant one per product..

you might want to clarify that in the OP. Happy

I see why you want the limitation, but I have my doubts as to the number of participants and whether this will actually result in descriptions for everybody. I hope I'm too pessimistic.
