How To Insert Images To Your Posts On The Forums
Posted: Sunday, January 14, 2018 5:44:12 AM
If you don't want to post your image anywhere but on the forum (i.e. it is a screenshot of your activity on Z):

0. Take screenshot or create the image (there are many ways of taking screenshots, use Ctrl+PrinScreen, or just PrintScreen, or Ctrl+Fn+PrintScreen, or use the utility Screenshot (exists in Lunux and allows to grab only selected screen area instead of whole screen, maybe there are similar utilities for Windows and MacOS). If someone who uses Windows or MacOS can help with keyboard shortcuts and utilities / plugins, please post it in the comments.

1. Upload the image you want to insert to "My Images" folder.

2. When it appears there (if it doesn't immediately, refresh the page), hover the mouse over it, right click, and choose "Copy Image Location" (or "Copy Image Link" or however it is worded in your browser).

3. Go to your post on the forum and paste the link.

4. Select the link and click the mountain icon that is in the middle of the icons row. You will see the brackets with some code appeared around your link. Make sure the brackets with the code wrap your link without spaces or paragraphs forming a single long "word". That's it, but:

5. To make sure you inserted the image properly, click "Preview" button which is beside "Post" button and see how your image looks. If you are happy with it, click Post.

Keep in mind that the image will stay in your post as long as the image is stored in your My Images folder. If you delete it from there, your image will disappear from your post as well.

If you are okay with posting your image elsewhere or if the image is already uploaded to some place on the web:

Same as above but instead of uploading your image to your My Images folder upload it to the web (image host service, or your blog, or anywhere you're comfortable with), copy image link and do the rest as described.

That's it!

The only caveat, one that regularly occurs with screenshots, is that the image is often wide, causing not just your post to be wide, but also the entire thread, which ends up with a horizontal scroll bar. It helps to edit the image before uploading it to Images.

EDIT: I got thinking about this and am thinking it doesn't happen when the picture is first uploaded to the Images folder and then linked to from there. If this is true, how are people managing those oversized images in the forum?

A month after this thread, Scott posted a sticky thread about how to post screenshots. It prevents the issue that colorwash mentioned:

or if you know how to change the image dimensions in the html code you can make them small enough that they don't do that too.

I don't like using the image folder for posting pics to the forum because I don't want to go through them when I'm designing stuff.

This is where IMGBB is becoming handy. It is one site where you can store any image and it provides an img-link with bb-code for you convenience. ... and it is free.
