Yes, I think it's U.S. law, or at least it's a regulation, which amounts to the same thing except that Congress didn't do it. A bureaucracy did it instead. :-)

Had to research about the 1099 form, bks I was curious.
In 1918, Form 1099 was created by the Internal Revenue Service for use with the 1917 tax year. At the time, employers were required to use the form to report salaries paid in excess of $800.

That's interesting because, back then, a salary of $800 would be extremely high. This means that the bulk of the population didn't have to report their meager earnings. Notice it was a bureaucracy that created the "law." Congress creates laws and then hands those laws over to their attack dogs, the bureaucrats. (I'm a jaded, cranky old lady.)

@Colorwash
Hey CW, we are probably the same cranky old age.

I'm probably the oldest person here, which means I may be the crankiest. I just hide the fact most of the time. :-)

You've never been cranky with me... Grin

You don't have to disclose your age, but.... I'll be 73 in April

Mine came today. Last year was rough. I barely made the taxable thresh hold. 2019 was my worst year ever. It's a good thing I have other income or we'd have starved.

I can only hope that all of the changes Z has made will eventually level things out for those that have stayed through the "Purge of '19".

Love

Mine showed up a few days ago.

I'm so glad the government finally said, "That's it! Get those W-2's and 1099's out before Feb. 1st.
