Can no longer re-arrange categories in my store
Posted: Sunday, February 11, 2018 8:47:53 PM
It has been awhile since I attempted to rearrange and tidy up my categories. But in the past each category was represented as a box (no photo) which I could click on and drag to a new spot, making sure to align with the red mark. No problems. Now the category boxes are gone and many attempts at dragging and dropping are not working. Any ideas (I did a search but found nothing for this problem exactly)?

Did you click the "All Categories" link in the back end? I think you have to be there to do it. It seems to be working for me. Could be a browser issue?

Yes, Fuzzy, I am in the back end of store and doing what I have always done before. Don't know when the category boxes disappeared and don't understand why I can no longer do what I used to be able to do. I am not a computer whiz so perhaps the problem is arising from that end but I am inclined to think not. I do appreciate your reaching out--thank you!

I'm wondering how you could get an empty box, given that a category needs an image to show. I just now looked at mine, and there are only two categories that have no image, deliberately done so those categories don't show publicly. Rearrangement is there to be done.

Well, Colorwash, I used to have empty "boxes" or squares for each category in my store (backend). I never put images on the "boxes" --just empty square with the name of the category. I would "grab" the corner of the box or square and drag it into the place I wanted it among all the other squares whenever I wanted to change the order. Only thing I had to do is make sure to hit the "sweet spot" of the red line mark which allowed the box to be moved to another spot. But now there is no square or box, just the printed names of the different categories. So, I have tried to grab the category name and move that. I can drag it and it bounces right back to the original position rather than staying "pinned" into the new position. And no matter where I position the category name the red line mark that I
used to use to "grab and drag" the box, does not appear. Without the box, it is rather
difficult to begin with because it was the corner of the box I used to drag. Now they (the box and the red mark) are not there. Does that make any sense? It probably is not important since it is said here in the Forum that very few people come to our stores. Still I would like to tidy things up a bit and do some rearranging for my own satisfaction. At the top of the "Store Categories" it says :
"You can drag & drop any Category between other Categories to change their order.
Categories must contain a cover image to be featured on the Store homepage." I assume that my not having an image in the boxes is not affecting it since this is the "back end" of the store and only for me to look at---and it never affected it before. I am just trying to figure out why the drop and drag for rearranging is not working as it used to.
Thank you Colorwash for your input.

I had another look at mine. I do have one hidden category with no associated image. It shows me an empty light gray box. Maybe the color is close enough that it blends in with the background on your monitor? I hesitate to advise adjusting your monitor settings, though.

If by words you mean the name of the category appearing below where the empty box should be, I can confirm that it won't work to try dragging the name. Maybe try clicking a bit above it, to see if the red line for repositioning appears as you start to drag? But based on reading your previous posts, it sounds like you may have already tried that?

If so, then I'm back to thinking it could be a browser issue of some sort. Maybe try emptying your cache, closing, and reopening the browser, if you haven't already.

I just tried again, making sure to grab one of my two categories that have no image. It was a box just slightly darker than the page background as Fuzzy describes, and I was able to grab that box and move it. However, grabbing the name of the category resulted in absolutely nothing. Try doing as Fuzzy suggests, moving your cursor above the title and clicking there.

I have not tried emptying cache or changing browser yet and it is about the only thing left that I can think of to try. It was a surprise to me when I went to my Store Categories in the back end to find there were no longer any boxes/squares representing the categories--only the category names appeared where the boxes used to appear. These are not hidden categories by the way. Have no idea if that makes a difference here or not. I did finally upgrade my system since I had been using the old Mountain Lion. Did it in steps going from Mountain Lion to El Capitan and now to High Sierra. I have no clue as to whether or how that affects anything! Thank you Fuzzy.

So you're not seeing a blank space where the boxes used to be, just the category names?

I was thinking maybe there was a setting somewhere that let you choose to display only the category names, but it's the other way around; the option lets you display only the cover image, with no category names. So it doesn't seem to be a case of a setting somehow changing itself.

Yes, I think emptying cache and/or trying a different browser are definitely the next thing to try.

Well, Fuzzy, I am at a loss as to what I could do next that might solve my problem. I did the clearing of the cache and even tried another browser. I have to assume that any problem is on MY end and not on Zazzle's since I have not seen any other comments from other zazzlers regarding this problem. I am very appreciative of your taking time to try to assist me!

Just a note to update on my "problem": I have discovered that if I add pictures to my categories then I CAN re-arrange them! I had never bothered to add pics to my categories and it never made a difference in the past. I could still re-arrange them. Obviously, that has changed and it now requires you to add the pictures representing the various categories before it will "let" you re-arrange--at least, in my case that is the way it has been. Thanks again for those who "reached out" to help me solve the mystery.

Glad to see that you found a solution.
