Hey Designers,

Please feel free to share your feedback on the New Design tool, here.

Please note that at the moment, this is an A/B test release, so not everyone will get this at the same time.

This thread is strictly for constructive feedback for users that have had a chance to test out this exciting new feature. Any posts off topic, including "+1" posts (cuz that ain't constructive feedback) will be deleted without notice.

We hope you all enjoy interacting with this new tool and look forward to hearing your thoughts. Roses

I'm not seeing the new tool so I must not be part of the test group. I am curious about it though.

For a bit of clarity: we'll be turning on the test some time this morning, but we don't have an exact time. We decided to inform you guys of this feature a little bit ahead of time just so that you're aware.

I'm not seeing it either, but I should think we would have seen someone show up by now who's included in the test, so maybe it hasn't been rolled out yet.

This is VERY exciting news! Smile Shocked Idea

I'm not included in the A/B testing yet, or I don't think I am since I'm not seeing anything different from usual. But I sure hope I'll get my turn to work with it. Can't wait to see it in action!

You sneaky boogers, you! Making me (us) feel all fuzzy and warm about Zazzle again, after all the fuzz about the icon thing. Have a great weekend yall!

This is pretty exciting. My one hope is that we'll be able to design directly on the product again instead of having to click back and forth between the design view and a popup product view.

Thank you for the information.

As of right now, no one is included. The test hasn't begun yet.

These are great news, can't wait to see it. I'll check it out as soon as I'm able to and I'll let you know about all the little quirks I'll find, so you can use your leftover tar and feathers on me. Grin

P.S. don't think I'm immune, spent the past nights on code optimizing, error finding and fixing, hacks searching and dealing with silly browsers and their compatibility issues. Just fyi, for some luls...

This looks like a pretty cool deal. I am looking forward to trying it out and wish I had more Zazzle time today!

For the record, when I asked for only +1 replies before I was only trying to avoid having that thread turn into another huge heated debate.

I see the new design tool and it looks good. Obviously, it's not very comfortable to design in it right now because I have to learn where everything is but it looks very good. What I REALLY want to see is the design groupings, I haven't seen any yet.

Trying out the new tool, I am not seeing two features that I used to use all the time.

One is the button with the directional arrow keys for moving incrementally from side to side.

The next is the lock item feature under more. I see make permanent and always visible but that is not the same as lock. I don't lock things all that often but I would like to have that option.

Are they hidden somewhere and I just didn't find them or missing in action?

Adding: I see you can drag the design from side to side but it is to hard to get precise that way.

Kind of "hidden", but its right here:

Place your mouse over the layer and it'll show up.

Creating a holiday invitation - I can normally adjust my letter spacing at 0.05 -

seems like the minimum is now 0.1

Can it be included pretty please or have I missed the setting somehow

Anyone else having issues changing the font size on invitations? I typed 10 in the font size box, but it keeps acting like I am typing 40. I tried other numbers like 23 and it thinks I typed 43. Luckily, I am able to use the scale button to change the font size.

I had the same problem - I wanted a 22 but it really wanted me to use 42

I guess I'd have to try to get by with keyboard shortcuts (assuming those at least still work), but not having incremental diagonal controls for so long was just awful. It will be a crying shame if we've lost them again.

Dragging things isn't an option for me, as I have motor control issues (which is also why I've largely had to give up drawing.) If dragging becomes the only option, then I would be limited to single image designs that require no placement adjustment.

Please tell me the directional controls are just hidden somewhere. I really can't design without them.

I am visually impaired so here is what I found. I don't see what I am designing any better than with the old version I think it is actually a bit harder because the screen is central but doesn't look any bigger to me. I like the preview and I like the image uploader. I found it very hard to work out how to get to change the background colour. I still can't find the equivalent of the change image option which is making me clear my existing image and start from scratch. When I have tiled images that makes it take a lot longer. I like the icons on the top but the ones on the left are harder to see. Seems like more clicking to get the same amount done and right now a design is taking me 5 times as long. I am glad I don't have this version on my PC yet. I shall be avoiding my laptop and the new version as much as possible. It would have been easier to have this in a less busy time than the run up to Christmas.
I hope this is constructive and not too moany. I think I will get used to it in time like I did with the last change.

The features sound amazing! Just wishing it could have been rolled out on Tuesday - after the holiday contest deadline! Grin

Kevin, thank you for your response and I did already see the padlock when I set my image to "make permanent and always visible"

However that is not what I meant.

Under the "more" ... button in the old design tool there are several options
1)"make whites transparent"
2)"make this a template object"
3)"make permanent and always visible"
4)"lock object"

it is number 4 that is completely misssing

The difference between numbers 3 and 4 is that with number 3 the buyer can still scale and move the image but with number 4 they cannot.

Number 4 was incredibly important for designs with multiple layers that if moved destroy the integrity of the design or also for any designer that just doesn't want to allow scaling and moving.

Yes I agree! and I don't have motor skill issues but for times when you just need to be precise for instance when making two sided mug designs, that is such an important tool to have.

Thank you all for providing us with your feedback. In regards to the removal of the directional pad, this was definitely a tough decision, but one that we felt will be beneficial long-term. One thing that we noticed was that other design tools on the internet or on a desktop (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc) do not have a directional pad available either. We have retained the scaling and snapping tools, which can be used to move and align layers with precision. The keyboard shortcuts are still available and using the arrow keys works the same way as the directional pad. We’re hoping that we can expand the capabilities of these keyboard shortcuts over time.

Just to confirm, so when you add a new layer and then click on the lock icon in the layer list (without selecting make permanent/visible), changes can still be made to it (resizing, moving, etc)?

I don't need the design tool to be like digital art programs. I don't want Zazzle to be like other sites and/or art programs. I use the directional pad to center my elements. I don't use snap, it just doesn't perform for me the way I would like, so if the pad is gone I am not sure what I will do. Most likely stop adding designs I reckon :/ I was looking forward to seeing this new format but now I am not *sigh* Good luck y'all!

My first thought ~ Wow! Your screen shots helped explain the new placement of the tools and features. Can't wait to play with it! Loving your svg feature for designers too! Love

My second thought ~ I remember that cute turtle from fluff(Friends)! I first learned of Zazzle from the FB ads of fluff(Friends) products on the app sidebar. Mine was a dolphin named Esparta. Any other fluffers out there? Met so many wonderful friends thru that app.

eta: no directional pad? :/

eta again: the change image and tiling functions are extremely useful and needed, especially with the new design grouping. Please bring them back.

"More Options" button for images doesn't show "tile this image" option which I used instead of "Patterns" button. Is it removed forever? If yes, why? I'd prefer it to remain. It works not in the same way as Pattern tool and it's better, faster and more convenient than Pattern tool when covering a product with a seamless pattern. Please bring it back (or please point it for me where it is if I just couldn't find it).

Also. Needing to collapse/expand preview when working with "More Options" is not convenient.
Posted: Friday, October 19, 2018 2:39:05 PM
"Learn More" (about templates, making object permanent) take space that could be used for Tile This Image option. "Learn More" links can be easily hidden behind a "?" icon which could be placed in the end of each option phrase.

Okay in a round about way you just told me where the new lock option is located, in the layer list...

to answer your question, I don't know (yet) but I doubt it, if the lock layer works the same as the lock object did.

thanks for your help

Off to try that lock layer function...

Adding: @Kevin I just tested it and lock works as expected. thanks again.

And for anyone who also has trouble finding the lock option click on the little blue padlock located to the left of the thumbnail and name of each layer. Blue means it is unlocked and it turns dark gray when it is locked.

I don't know Illustrator, but Corel Draw has nice moving and positioning tools: center page, top, left, right, bottom page, move x pixel/inch/cm/whatever up/down/right/left with one mouse-click, scale to a certain size in inch/cm/whatever again, etc etc etc. No directional pad in that sense, but you can have your own toolbars with one-click icons and sidebars with easy-to-use tool windows. And there is also a powerful zoom in-and-out function.

With all my respect, you are keeping simplifying stuff AND losing functionality. You got rid - AGAIN - of a good and useful tool (not all know the resp. shortcuts, and I use the pad a lot myself, especially for quick centering and sticking to the edges and then moving). As you did with the blank/no grids on calendars, ditto with the delete button of template images. Sorry for the not-so-good feedback.

Having to do an extra click to get to Background Color is not convenient.

ETA: Actually 2 extra clicks. Not convenient at all. Also, if a customer gets to the design tool to customize background color, how long do you think would it take them to find where Background Color is hidden?
