Deleting products in the categories wound up deleting products in store

Is this a glitch?

I was trying to reorganize my categories and went to delete categories and subcategories in order to do so. My store products wound up being deleted within the categories section, they have been deleted under products and collections and are just gone. I'm hoping zazzle support can help with this issue.

Does anyone know of this issue? Also what's left of my store products doesn't show how many views, or times it was purchased and all of that information

I don't think that's an actual issue...you have to move your products to other categories first (that you're keeping) and then when that old category is empty, you can delete your old category. Did it say 'Delete From Category'?

Cats and Subs can't be deleted if products are in them. A message even appears to alert you of that. So I'm not sure what happened to you. Maybe Scott can help you when Z Staff is back in office after the weekend.

As Gina said, it won't let you delete categories with products in them and gives you a pop up warning.

So did you empty the categories by deleting the items instead of just moving them? That would explain it. If you delete the products within a category it just deletes them from your whole store.

Hi all, thanks for responding. I did just that - empty the categories by deleting the items. I did not know they had to be moved. I thought the product would stay in the store no matter what and categories were just acting as filters for customers to navigate. This is awful.

Categories work like Windows folders: the products are physically in the category they are stored. So if you delete them, they're gone. Collections are a different story, these contain only a reference to the listed products and you can move and delete them at will.

I’m really sorry that happened to you and hope you can recover quickly.

PetsDreamlands Thank you for the explanation of both the categories and collections I appreciate that it's very helpful! This was a really tough lesson to learn... if only I had made that connection. Thanks MelroseOriginals for your uplifting and kind words Smile I will have to rebuild from scratch and pull it together and be super organized.

Hi Maura, I am sorry to hear about this situation. Thanks to all who chimed in here. There is no tech error present here it seems so I will be moving to Create. Thanks Smile
