Do I need a Zazzler's permission to put referrals, with product images, on my pages? 2 pages: [1] 2

I make Squidoo articles on mythology and ancient Greece and random "cool whiz bang" topics, and try to earn a pittance for them through the advertising in the sidebar.

MY pages need pretty graphics.
YOU guys create lovely designs, and need referrals.

Most Zazzle products have a "Link" area where you can get a referral link to a product. This is great! So there's the product image, and there's the referral link, all ready for me to embed on my page!

Buuuuuuuuut.

Waitaminute. Do most Zazzle members realize that those embed codes are available? Is there a way for them to turn OFF that option if they would prefer that crazy people like me not feature their graphics, even with the referral link?

I could contact each and every Zazzler artist whose graphics I wish to use and say, "Is it okay if I use this here? I'll give you a referral link!"

But, honestly, I don't know if I have time. My articles already take days to write. Waiting on email exchanges for all the artists on a page with multiple graphics is a lot slower than going to Creative Commons, where a link plus credit will satisfy my "good webizen" code.

However, Creative Commons images do not come with the possibility of a referral fee if I succeed in driving a sale. ;)

So. The embed codes are there. Does that mean I may simply do it, and then (because I like to) leave a comment/rating on the person's page saying "Gorgeous design! I've posted a referral link for you!" Or would that bother some Zazzler to find their designs being used off-site, even with the referral?

A separate problem is that the Squidoo Sidebar is a perfect place to feature Zazzle referral graphics, except for one thing: there's such a tiny character limit that I can either feature one graphic with a text caption beneath it (here be an example), or 2-3 graphics. The referral links are there either way, and I have figured out how to hack the image code so that an artist's credit appears if someone hovers their cursor over the picture (like, say, if they tried to download it). But I'm not sure if that's enough to satisfy an artist's wishes.

What do you think? I am not talking rules, but courtesy. I'd get a referral fee out of this (mmmmaybe?) and you would get a sale. What is good Zazzle Referral Etiquette?

An associate is under no obligation to ask permission to list a product using the links that are provided for that purpose. The high volume associates are not hand picking products anyway, and simply could not ask permission. What is not allowed is copying the image instead of linking to it. Any image used must be the image stored on the Zazzle web site. This gives the designer and Zazzle a way to remove the image if there is a need.

Designers cannot both have their product public AND prevent associates from using them. If a designer does not want an associate to promote their product they can remove it from public display and promote it by direct link only.

Check out the "Ideas and sites used to promote your store" forum. Lots of Zazzlers use squidoo. Some may, but I haven't really noticed any using the sidebar. They create a lens and add products in the main body of the lens. There is a zazzle widget, but I don't believe you get a referral from those. There is a thread here on how to add zazzle products without the widget.

dogplay: Oh, excellent! That makes perfect sense. And the "public display" option is what i was trying to ask about. It would be rare, but I imagine there are some artists who prefer more direct control, even if it means fewer sales.

cutechristmas: yes, I know a number of successful Zazzle Shopkeepers / Squidooers (and have bought a few items). I have Squidoo's built-in Zazzle module on a few of my lenses, because Squidoo pays based on performance, so even without the referral link I'm getting some benefit while showcasing someone's store. But a referral bonus would be nice, so, yeah.

Thank you both.

I get a few hundred visitors a week on a lot of my pages, and the better ones have pagerank, so hopefully I can help a few shopkeepers in return for being allowed to feature their pictures.

Honestly, I couldn't care less even how or why any of my items are promoted. You could devote a page calling my designs complete *, point out flaws, poke fun at me and my "art" and if it resulted in traffic and $ales I'd be totally ok with that.

The people who don't like being promoted (imo) don't fully understand how it all works, or are just really particular about the quality of any links pointing to them. Either way, you don't need anyone's permission.

Most people love to be promoted, but there are some people out there who will get angry for linking to their products/work. I remember one person at a different print on demand site threaten lawsuit for promoting them!

I love when folks promote me, whether intentionally or not, and earn a referral fee in the process (like the bulk referred sale from earlier today).

I agree, most people do love to be promoted. So long as you don't actually use their designs. You both make money when doing things like that.

Only if they tell you and not many will. Zazzle doesn't give us that info for various reasons.

Wow, look at all you great folks!

*scuffs foot* I should've looked back through this thread while coming up with examples. I look forward to browsing.

And I really need to work on my own store, too. My art skills are pathetic (I say woefully, coming from a family of artists), but I snapped enough photos of ancient Greek art to have a few worth turning into designs. 2400 year old art = no copyright!

RE: that lawsuit, the AP actually sent a cease and desist order to ITSELF (or rather, to an affiliate TV station) for displaying AP YouTube videos.

Web copyright and Web 2.0 content sharing is a little bit fuzzy and messy, and we're not all on the same page. I would not be surprised if there is a variety of opinions among Zazzlers on this. Anyhoo, I shall do my best to help out a few folks besides my friend Flynn the Cat, whose artwork I am shamefully plugging (and wearing).

I have a whole blog dedicated to just the Famous Brands
http://famousbrandgifts.blogspot.com/

Then.... I like using the banners that zazzle supplies WITH our RF# in the code. (see down the right side)

Then I use the Pet Banner at http://petsadored.com/contest/
and http://petsadored.blogspot.com/
(see the animal "causes" there - all from zazzle)

Then those banners are great on facebook biz pages like at
http://www.facebook.com/businessesgrowingtogether
(look under the Welcome tab which is the landing page & Coupon page)

You can't tell I LOVE zazzle! (& I LOVE those payments every month too) Grin
