Gimp for raster graphics, Inkscape for vector, Raw Therapee (a Lightroom alternative which can be used with many image formats as well as raw). There are also versions of Linux specifically geared toward creative work such as Ubuntu Studio and ArtistX which come already loaded with software for graphics, audio and video work.

Steve.

Thanks so much for that info, I didn't know there are versions of linux geared towards creative work, I'll have to look into it. I'm tired of getting viruses and was thinking of ditching windows for linux but don't want to give up my paint shop pro.

One of my most used tools for graphics is ImageMagick. This is a command line tool to create or modify image files.

All of these clocks were made using imagemagick programmatically.

Since your into painting Idea , it's well worth checking out Mypaint, (included in Ubuntu Studio). It's like Corel Painter or Artrage.

I made the switch to Ubuntu 2 or 3 years ago when my hardrive fried and my compaq restore disk went missing. It's great! If windows didn't come on the newer computer I have now it wouldn't be there at all. I rarely ever boot over to windows but keep it around because maybe I'll run across a graphics program I feel I need but can't run on ubuntu. Also I keep it because my mom runs windows 7 and often needs help and since I'm out of practice with windows I sometimes have to jump over to it to see what in the world she is talking about Smile. As Steve listed I use Gimp and Inkscape mostly gimp until I get my head around vector graphics. I can't get gimp to work on windows 7 but that's ok. It has be awesome actually spending more time on my work than wasting time trying to maintain and fix windows.

I'm happy on linux for yeas now... GIMP, Inkscape, Rawtherapee... you might want to check DarkTable for developing raw files as alternative to RawTherapee.
