FYI - as an affilliate, you can use an affilliate link to promote any public product on the Zazzle site.

I am just curious how one could promote on ebay at all...isn't it an auction site? How do you promote Zazzle items?

I don't know the ins and outs but somehow they offer the item for sale and then instead of actually linking to Zazzle (which is an ebay no-no) they are managing to bypass the system. You can sell on ebay if you have the products ready to ship yourself.

It would be cool if Zazzle offered a dropshipping / dropship option.
e.g. you take a customer order, then you go and put in an order for them through Zazzle to ship direct to them.

Would make it possible to sell on eBay then without the need to have stock on hand (which might be risky if you end up not selling that stock).

Or maybe thats possible anyway...? I looked around but didn't see anything.

The other option would be to take payment from the customer and then order the item for them.....too complicated for me, I have enough trouble selling from here Laughing

Not only that, you'd get dinged in the feedback for taking so long to deliver!Grin

Yeah thats what I meant. You setup an auction on eBay, someone wins and you accept their money through PayPal etc. like any other eBay auction. Then you just go to Zazzle and put in an order for them. The only question is, what the end packaging would look like.
Cafepress discussion on selling on eBay

I don't know how Zazzle deals with such things compared to Cafepress.

Basically when the eBay auction ends and the winner has paid you (which should be immediate or near enough unless they're a slow payer but you cant be held accountable for that) then you just put in an order for the winner through Zazzle.
Zazzle says the time for it to ship is within 24 hours so telling the winner its been shipped the same day (or the next if the auction was finished in the evening) that they've won is pretty decent.
It's the same level of service ordering for someone else on a store than for yourself so shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not real familiar with eBay but it seems as though selling items there as an auction would be a little risky price wise...what if the high bid isn't enough to cover the cost of the purchase from Zazzle, even with the discount, and lets not forget the high S/H costs here.

I just want to say that I did get replys from the owner of the store that had mine and others products up for sale on e-bay. she did state that she was doing the "affiliate" thing. But I have to say it would have been a bit more professional to first ask/inform us if it was ok. Twice before this I have found my art from here on other poeples e-stores so it is a sore spot with me! I'm perfectly willing to "partner" up as an affiliate with someone, I do want to know before hand and know what the heck is going on first though!...Maybe this all got blow out of proportion, If we would have been contacted first it would hae been a whole different situation I think!... Makes one wonder how many of us have our designs being used on other peoples sites with out our knowledge!

I've not sold on eBay before either but have bought quite a few things. As far as I know you can set a Reserve price assuring it will not sell below a certain amount. The winner also has to pay shipping costs in addition to the item price and are noted at the bottom of the auction. Alternatively you can just list it as Buy It Now, which is a fixed price (no bids, they just 'buy it now' as is, so won't let people bid below or above that price). I think most of what I bought on eBay has been Buy It Now as opposed to bidding for stuff.

The main cost risks is with eBay fees (not a huge amount for 1 listing but can mount up if you continually fail to sell). But with eBay's vast community it is just something else that can be worth a try.

Thanks for the info on eBay, I have gone in and tried to buy at auction a couple times (gifts for the Grandson) but they always raise the bid so high at the last minute it's a waste of time for me.
Now about the affiliate thing on eBay, maybe I don't fully understand the concept but it was my understanding that to use this you have to have a zazzle store link on the site (with the *) and if someone purchases using that link then the store owner gets the sale and you get the 7%. How is this person using eBay as an affiliate if William isn't getting the sale?

when you sign up to be an affilliate, you can use the star thing to get percentages of sales for new customers.

Affilliates can also promote your products and gets sales of those items. We can do it too. They don't need to ask our permission to use an affiliate link to any of items. When you go to the affiliate section of your account, you can enter other contributor names or product numbers. Also, the Link to This on each product provides the info to create an affiliate link to that item.

William will get the sale - if there is a sale. Just because the items are shown on eBay, doesn't mean they've sold. You cold do a search of completed auctions to check.

As for selling them on eBay, I suppose as long as they are not passing the items off as their own work and say in the auction that it's a design by SOANDSO, that it's within the affiliate agreement. But it wouldn't hurt to ask Zazzle about the particulars of these kinds of sales.

As for the comment about getting a bad rating on eBay for shipping - not true. I was a seller on eBay for 3 years and I sold some of my items from CP on there - in addition to a lot of other things. I also had an account at a drop ship company that specialized in eBay sales. As long as the shipping time is stated clearly in your auction you're fine. I had jewelry for sale that was made to order and would take up to 3 weeks to ship. Only one person ever complained, and after I contacted her, she left another comment that it was her fault she hadn't read the whole auction.

Most eBayers know things don't get shipped the minute they win the auction. There are even some eBayers who state clearly that they only have one shipping day a week because their local post office is a long drive for them.

But the comments about racking up fees without sales is right. That was what finally made me quit selling.

EDIT:

after re-reading the affiliate section of the site, I have decided to email Zazzle and ask them about selling other people's item's via eBay. The 7% fee is for driving new traffic to Zazzle. If you sell via eBay, there is no traffic. The eBay customer never even knows about eBay of the various shops the items come from. So... let's see what Zazzle says about it.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I'm not involved in that aspect of the program where I use others work so I didn't grasp the whole idea behind it.

Hello - this is Marlo from White Cat Designs/MarloDee Designs. First of all I want to again apologize for all of the mess I caused. It really wasn't my intention. I have an Ebay store where I have my items from my zazzle stores and cafepress store to resell - make more money. I knew that zazzle (as well as cafepress) has an affiliate program where I can earn a percentage from sales I affiliate/refer. Here was my intention and procedure for listing on Ebay.

I listed a few greeting cards(mother's day cards) from a small handful of other artists. When I listed the item I did state that the item was from them. It was listed the exact and actual product that was listed in their zazzle store. So for example if they were offering their design as a card - I listed it as a card. I did NOT take the image and then create other items or alter their items in anyway to make new items. I used their zazzle name if I did not know the original name. In my policies on my About Me page via my Ebay store - I stated that I outsource my printing. So, I am stating that I don't do my own printing. In regards to the fees I have with Ebay and such - my costs for Ebay were calculated within my shipping fees - so that was covered.

Once I would receive a sale for someones card - I would then collect the funds from that sale from my customer. Then that day or the next (depending on the time of the sale) I would then visit Zazzle via the link using the star and purchase the card from the artist from their zazzle site/store. I NEVER took the image and then used it to print or produce my own items to resell. I would then put the ship to address to the customer(my customer). The actual item was then recorded as a sale through the artists zazzle site - they would receive their commission from the sale (and credit) and then I would receive a referral commission from the star link through my account. Then - zazzle would print and ship the item to my customer under the artists name. Basically I was the middle man.

Problem is - from the original artist and william - their concern was that I didn't contact them prior to doing this to ask them if I could. I unfortunately, was under the assumption that because of the affiliate concept and that I did post it was from them that it was not necessary to do so. Look - it was NEVER my intention to upset anyone and start a whirlwind of people now having to keep an eye on me - calling me a thief and stating I was stealing their work.
Whether they believe me or not - it was on the same lines as using the affiliate star system that zazzle offers. It was the same concept as posting a link to their item by showing their item on a blog or website outside of zazzle. But since I am not able to have a direct link their zazzle site - I was instead promoting and selling their item via my Ebay store and then passing the sale onto them while having zazzle print and ship the item.

I am concerned about the stealing part because I didn't steal anything. I did not take their artwork from zazzle(example right click) and then print/produce various items(or cards) with their work. There was an assumption from not knowing the affiliate system and concept that I am someone who steals and I am dishonest. And even through research from the original artist - telling me basically that since I have God my life that I should know better and know that stealing is wrong? I realize - I have gone down this road myself - that in todays internet age that stealing others works and using them without permission is on the rise and makes people really unsure about selling works on the net. But, I tried to explain to the artist that I was reselling her cards just in the same was as if someone took a link via her zazzle site using the star link system. Instead of posting a link and having the customer visit their site themself to purchase - I was purchasing from her site on my customers behalf. But, unfortunately, I think she was way too upset with me and concept that no matter how much explaining - well I did not intend on it to go this way. She basically stated that I was doing this dishonestly and that I was going to do it until I got caught.

Look - I might not be explaining myself properly or fully here. I can see other artists on this post understand the system and understand what I was doing. I have removed all of the items that are not my designs(all 20 in total) from my Ebay store. I am again sorry - I did not mean to upset anyone. Now I am being told that everyone is now watching me and that my reputation is ruined here on Zazzle and elsewhere. I am now considered a theif and dishonest. I received an email from william stating now everyone is going to be watching me. And that if it was an honest mistake so be it but I have to understand that what I did was dishonest and that I should have contacted him first to partner with him. Again - I can't keep saying it enough - I did not steal anyones artwork and/or images.

Look, if someone wanted to resell my items(I have through my cafepress store an affiliate program) I would not have a problem with it as long as they stated the item was from me(which I did), they didn't take the image and produce other items(which I didn't), they had zazzle and/or cafepress create the item(which was the intention). I had a gentleman a couple of weeks ago purchase 100 magnets of a particular design of mine through Zazzle. I know that he was purchasing them to resell - unless he really likes shamrocks and wanted to have 100 magnets in his house - or he has 100 relatives he is giving them to(could be possible). What I am saying is that is what I was doing - just as KRW stated above.

So, I have gone around and apologize to all that I upset(I really do mean that I am sorry), I have removed the items from my Ebay store. I have also removed their links I had on my various other sites(they were links going directly to their zazzle section) and I will never do this again. I did not receive any sales for their items from my Ebay store (or from the links) and I just listed the items in my Ebay store about 2/3 weeks ago - so they were not listed that long. If you have any ideas of promoting other zazzlers - I say don't. Unless you have direct links ONLY. And even with that be careful. Otherwise you could end up like me - having to spend a lot of time apologizing and trying to explain.

Again I am sorry to everyone - Marlo

I also think you explained your position well Marlo and I also think a lot of the situation was caused by a misunderstanding of the 'affiliate' program. I know I myself did not understand how it worked until it was explained to me in this thread.

Hi Marlo-

I'm so sorry that this has happened. People are so quick to call other's theives without waiting to find out if there is a reasonable explanation first and that's wrong. Especially as you were giving proper credit to the design owner.

If people here are not aware that by creating on any POD site that offers an affiliate program that others can- and will - promote their items, then it is they who are wrong - not the affiliate who is doing what they have been given permission to do by Zazzle.

For those who blasted Marlo and are calling her a theif - you owe her an apology. It was your own misunderstanding of the system that caused your upset and not her. She didn't steal anything from anyone. If anything - she was getting you additional sales.

FYI Marlo - as long as Zazzle says this is ok (since you're not actually driving traffic to Zazzle this way), you have my permission to promote and sell any of my items from any of my 7 shops on eBay.

Thank you ladies - I am still finding posts and emails that I am having to respond to and apologize and explain. I tell ya - this has gotten blown way out of porportion - I guess my rep is ruined here on Zazzle. I am wondering where there are other posts about me and my websites stating I am a thief and I steal others works.

So again to all I am sorry.

If you have considered to promote - resell - advertise zazzlers - DON'T! Even with the direct links to products - using the star system or just adding favorite items to your favorites section. Only promote yourself and your items alone. If you do decide to promote others - link direct links, gallery promotions and the star link system - ask the artist first because they may come back and decide to plaster all over the place you are a thief - a cheat - dishonest - you better watch yourself - shame on you - if you have God in your life you should know better - understand we are going to be visiting your sites now everyday and watching you like a hawk(this is what I have gotten so far and are still opening up and/or finding) - just to state a few. I think I am going to remove all items I have in my favorites section as well and not promote anyone else - I know that may seem like I am going over board - but because of the fact people jumped on the boat to ruin White Cat Designs/MarloDee Designs reputation first and turn it into a witchhunt before asking me what I was doing and possibly thinking that not everyone out there is out to steal others works, screw others over and are dishonest - I just don't want to help anyone now. And because I didn't contact them first to use a system that is already in place - well that has also caused me a reputation and trouble. I am sorry - but that is the way I feel right now. - Marlo
