I'm a UK seller, and Zazzle inform me that I need to complete the W-8BEN form. The form, and it's almost impenetrable notes seem to suggest I Also need to complete formW-7 in order to get a ITIN US tax reference number. Can anybody confirm whether or not this is necessary?

You should only need to fill in the W-8 BEN, and you'll probably find (like I did) that in reality it's fairly simple, as much of it probably doesn't apply to you.
You'll notice I said 'probably' twice there (you'll probably notice anyway!) - that's because without knowing anything about your own situation I can't be absolutely sure, but I'm a UK seller and while it looked very daunting at first it actually turned out to be reasonably straightforward.

Whether or not its necessary depends on how keen you are to pay for Mr Obama's tea and crumpets. Its up to you to judge whether the costs exceed the benefits.
For me it took a while to sort out but I was already in the process of sorting everything out with a couple of stock agencies I work with.
To begin with I needed a letter of income from one of those agencies and a noterised copy of my passport. I got the latter from the US ambassador here in Amsterdam, which cost about 40 minutes plus an amount of money (I cant remember how much - about €40 and they tried to overchange me.) I understand from a colleague in the UK that his wife, who happened to be in London for a conference could sort out his noterised copy for him at the US embassy there, although she did need proof of ID.
These two pieces of documentation I sent with the completed form (I think W7) to the IRS office in Frankfurt.
Three months later phone call to Texas who said I shouldn't have sent it to Frankfurt, a phone call to Frankfurt who said I should have and that Texas had received it and then a final phone call to Texas where a nice gentleman gave me my ITIN on the phone and resent the form with the number on it which had apparently got lost in the post.
With an ITIN number I could then fill in the W8-BEN form to send on to the various US companies with which I work.
Simples? No not really. An odyssey in tax legal'ese and red tape? Neither.

The ITIN hasn't been necessary for me so far, and I avoid any site that requires it. It's an even more complicated procedure for me than it was for Funkyworm, and quite honestly, it wouldn't be worth the effort.

The ITIN is only needed for foreigners who file US tax returns. If you are not filing a US tax return there is no reason to apply for an ITIN.

You just need the W-8. I'm in the UK, I don't yet have an ITIN, and haven't had tax withheld by Zazzle. I do plan to get one though, since I need it for elsewhere.

How do I know if I fit into the other categories other than individual? I emailed Zazzle, they said they can't help me, I need to ask my tax advisor. Yeah, cos we all have 1 of them!!
