Just got notified by my Amazon Associates that using their share button on Twitter will generate referral fees.
I've been in several discussions here on Zazzle where we've been unhappy that has not been the case here. Will there be an update for Zazzle or is Amazon able to do something Zazzle is not?
Anyone else know? Zazzle - comments?
Deb
FYI, part of the Amazon note:
Today we are excited to announce the launch of a new feature called Share on Twitter. You can access Share on Twitter from the Site Stripe and post to your Twitter account from Amazon detail pages in just two clicks.
The Share on Twitter feature is easy to use. Simply log in to your Amazon Associates account and then visit any detail page on Amazon.com. By clicking on the Share on Twitter button in the Site Stripe, a new window will open and an Amazon-generated message is pre populated in the ‘What are you doing?’ text area of your Twitter account (you may be asked to log in to your Twitter account). That message will include a shortened URL that already includes your Associates ID. You’ll have the option to edit this message or simply hit the ‘Update’ button to post to your Twitter account. When Twitter users click on the link in your post and make a qualifying sale, you’ll earn referral fees. That’s it.

You can do that with any of your Zazzle products...or anyone elses. But...Dont think the referral ID # is included...which means you dont get the 15% referral fee.

Right, Tee. That's what I'm saying. It's easy as can be to tweet about a product and I do it all the time to mine and other people's. BUT, you don't get referrals for doing so. Initially, many of us thought you would, but the referral link is deleted at some point on the way back to one's store. It doesn't matter whether you used the Zazzle link, write it yourself, shrink the URL, or what - no referral.
So, why can Amazon apparently get referrals to go through and Zazzle can't? Where's the disconnect?

So, why can Amazon apparently get referrals to go through and Zazzle can't? Where's the disconnect? My guess is because Zazzle thinks they make more money by not offering it. ...although..Im sure people would tweet products a lot more if they knew they could get a referral from it. And...Im sure there are a lot out there thinking they are getting referrals from them and will stop tweeting other peoples products once they learn they are not getting referrals from it. Also, I was told by someone that if you type in your referral # into the tweet...you get the referral. Are you sure you dont? Someone should tweet their product..by typing in the referral, then clicking on it and purchasing the product just to see if it works. I never knew if that was true or not..so when I promote other people, I do it with Squidoo instead.

Interesting...I thought as long as you put in the rfid rather than the *, it worked on Twitter. Indeed, while selling the product is nice, I think we should get the referral credit for it as well. I really thought that was the entire point of twitter for this type of venue.

Sally~ I've been testing this to see if I can figure out what is going on and I have to say that I'm completely baffled! ...If you manually paste a standard Zazzle URL (no referral) into the bit.ly website, it generates the same short URL each time. So every URL has it's own short URL, it never changes) ...If you manually paste the same Zazzle URL but with your referral code attached, bit.ly generated a different short URL. This would be correct as the link has now changed thanks to the RF number and means that it kept the RF and didn't strip it. ...If you click the shortened URL (referral attached) it doesn't open the page with the small zbar. Since bit.ly seems to keep the referral when it generates the short code, shouldn't we be seeing the small zbar when it un-shortens? My best guess is it disappears during the unshortening. Here's the best one though! ...If you use Zazzle's Twitter link to tweet your product, the short URL which is produced through bit.ly matches neither of the 2 you get if you generate it manually through bit.ly's website... Surely it would produce the same result? All I can say is... HUH?

Here's a link to a thread we had going not long ago about this. Has anyone gotten any more feedback from Zazzle? Eric? http://forum.zazzle.com/tools/twitter_from_zazzle

I transform my links into tinyurl's before posting them on Twitter. This allows me to add more info and prevents the ref ID from being removed. You can access TinyUrl.com from the Community menu on the Zazzle Contributor Toolbar. Kris H.
