Seeing some of the American names for things are weird and wonderful to European eyes and ears I actually always thought this was a common expression and not a typo ..... Hilly

Of course I suppose the problem there is in the UK the word purse is only ever used to describe something to carry money which is different to a wallet (or bill-fold) insofar as it has a compartment for both coins and paper money. But could simply be a small bag for holding money without a note compartment. Anything more than that would generally be called a handbag, even if it's a shoulder bag it can still be a handbag with a shoulder strap. Wikipedia "In British English, a purse is a small money container similar to a wallet, but typically used by women and including a compartment for coins, with a handbag being considerably larger; indeed, a purse is often kept in a handbag." Since purses are normally kept inside handbags in the UK this categorisation doesn't seem at all strange. Of course I dare say although there may be a variety of local variations a lot of other English speaking countries would also tend to follow the UK English definitions of a purse or a handbag.
