I heard about the wikipedia commons and was looking at some images and some, even though they are in the "commons" they say you have to attribute according to the author's guidlines.

How would you go about that...would you have to put "wikipedia URL" on your product?

I see a lot of those images being used...I'd like to use some but I don't want to get sued down the line..

Anybody know what's up with this ??

Approach the use of images from wikipedia with caution. Anyone can upload images to commons and say that they are free to use

A couple of years ago, I discovered a image that I had the rights to had been uploaded as a public domain image. This image had been taken from another site where it was used with my permission and was marked with my copyright notice. My copyright notice had been removed in violation of Section 1202 of US Copyright Law

It was image that I sell as prints and cards on here.

The person who upload it had also done the same with an original drawing by a local artist who is a personal friend.

The fact that you got it from wikipedia wil not protect you from legal action by the copyright owner

I use Creative Commons images a lot, but not here on Zazzle. I think that it would be too intrusive to use on a product. I use them on web sites like Squidoo, Hub pages, and my own web sites where their use is more straightforward.

Public Domain images on Wikipedia are a little bit different. There are several reasons why an image can go into the public domain. They might be too old, or might be a government image or something. Usually you can tell why it's in the public domain because the web site will say. It's easier to confirm a government PD image, or an image that is 100 years old or something, than an image that someone just declares is in the public domain.
