colorcop
Colorcop is a tool I use all the time, but have not seen it listed here. It is a color picker that is free, easy to use and compatible with Windows. I use it nearly every day. It's accurate and is garbage free.

What type of tablet do you have and what OS are you using? Inkscape works with my Wacom Bamboo.

Here's a link to a photoshop alternative someone sent me. I've played with it a little and it seemed to work pretty good. Although they would like you to register, I didn't, and it still let me do what I needed. It's not a download, but it seemed to work quickly with no glitches. I don't edit my photos but thought I'd pass it along.

Sumo Paint main website
The actual editor

Might be good for some people here.

Another great free program is ArtRage Starter Edition (Full version has a few more brushes) at http://www.artrage.com/.

Its a paint/drawing program, but has a friendlier interface than gimp and photoshop.

For any of these programs, its always good to google the "program name + tutorials" to get good tips since some of them seem a bit intimidating at first-

good luck all!

This is a fantastic help, and I thank everyone for their contributions! Ideal for a newbie, on a budget! {read no budget Laughing }

So far I have been able to download, paint.net; photofiltre and artrage 2 starter ed. I have had no luck with gimp or photoplus ~ corrupt file errors or other such irritating messages after waiting for a dialup download! Crying

Which leads into my question ~ is Windows a particularly incompatible program for some software, or is there something that I am not doing properly? Like, is it better to choose "Save" rather than "Run" or does that not make any diff? {this was my next great idea to get my download!Smile}

Oh! And another question ~ I have Adobe photoshop elements 3 and I have found it very difficult to use for even simple stuff ~ like trying to alter my images so that the edges are roughened and look more interesting for the t-shirt still waiting in the design process {maybe I am trying the impossible, as it is a card making function, and I need to go work with the other tools there}

HOWEVER, is this a dud, or is it more that I don't know how to use it properly yet? I have tried to master layering too, as I want to make collages and more interesting photo manips, like creating faeryfolk, and Goddesses from portrait shots of individuals.

I may be expecting too much for free, still I am looking forward to seeing what I have so far Smile

Any advice, and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Ps: I just got Gimp! Third time lucky download ~ I finally went to Googlesearch for the newest version et voila!

AND et voila
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

hope that helps someone like I have been!

Happy

Found this link to a PC World article on digital photography software:

14 Downloads (Including Freebies) for Your Digital Photography Tool Kit

Not all are free (even some that the articles says are free aren't when you go to the site), and to my dismay one of the ones that sounded most interesting doesn't work on Vista Sad but many are free, and others are very low priced.

I'm looking for a simple downloadable Mac program or preferably an online editor, that lets me easily change the canvas size for an image. I have a ton of images designed for Cafepress that I want to place on a different size canvas. They are .png files

Inkscape doesn't seem to have a simple resize canvas option, I have to go into preferences and stuff. I hate Gimp, I don't need all that complexity. Several online tools let me place an image on a canvas of my choice, but their dimension limits are too low. Lots of image editors online don't let you change the canvas size and position an image around.

Any help?

I second Smoothdraw! I tried the free version and liked it so much I bought it. I draw almost exclusively in this program. Smoothest brushes I've found for cartooning, with a reasonable price tag.
