I can't afford to buy a lot of Christmas files, so I make due with what I have. My question is~is it usually a good idea to use some of the same design elements, but change colors & switch design elements? In example, these two Christmas invitations;

Yep .. I think it is .. and I do that very same thing .. if someone likes the holly on the top one but would prefer it with a blue background and you only offer the gold background .. potential sale lost .. if it works why not offer it? btw they are both great

For me, that's how I like to fill out my collections without making it look like everything was done with Quick Create. Lil' Miss Cuppy Cake was just a single graphic that I repositioned a few different ways to give variety within the theme. Tucker Turkey is one turkey with small variations that I did the same thing with and I really like the variety that just changing the placement makes. Personally I think it is more challenging to figure out how to use clipart in multiple ways rather than only having one variation for that design. There's nothing wrong with being frugal! I like your designs because they aren't the same, the gold look more formal but the blue seems more like something for a casual gathering. Also something else to point out is for graphics that have transparent backgrounds, I use Zazzle's background color so the customer can change it if they would prefer some other color. Then I don't worry so much about getting everything super perfect for the imaginary (and rather demanding!) customers in my head.

I do this a lot with my business cards. This way I offer my customers many variations to choose from.

Definitely add different varieties. Changing one small element can make a design mean something entirely different.

Did you all know holly is poisonous? http://landscaping.about.com/od/poisonouslandscapeplants/Poisonous_Plants_for_Cats_Dogs_Humans.htmQuote:Holly shrubs may be a Christmas favorite, but ingesting their berries causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Keep it away from your pets and children. I find it ironic that the media spends so much time arguing about medical marijuana but far less time informing us about poisonous plants.

Variations on a theme are cool, it can also add to a shops overall identity.
Hey Liley Photo thanks for those examples on different ways to place a graphic, that really adds some zing to the page of products!

I do color variations of some of the business cards I design. I put the original design in my Business Cards category, then link to the optional colors, which are in a different category. This makes it easy for shoppers to browse all designs without having to sift through a bunch of a single design to see what else I have. ExampleKris H.

I placed on any business card subcategory the design and when customers click on it they are got to all the variations. http://www.zazzle.com/zazzleproducts1/gifts?cg=196030083224065999

Since I do everything without the quick create, I figure if I get tired of seeing the same exact placement of the same image that it would turn customers off even more. I also write unique things in the text area on the products that have the template text boxes instead of "Your phrase here!!!1!" because I personally find that to be sloppy. It does take more time, but I still try to think about if I bought (whatever I'm currently making) what is the layout that best suits the product. It's why on one of my Lil' Miss Cuppy Cake bumper stickers it's only her eyes and the top of her head that shows because I thought it would be easiest to see it if you were in the car behind the one with the bumper sticker. Plus it still cracks me up. ~Susanne
